Buying a used car? Check it first.
Outstanding finance, a past write-off or a mileage discrepancy can cost you the car and your money. A seller's word isn't proof. Compare what they tell you with the official record before you hand over any money.

Frequently asked questions
Is the car check really free?
Yes. MOT history, mileage readings and vehicle details from the DVSA are free. The full history check (finance, write-off, stolen, keepers) comes from licensed insurance and finance databases and is paid.
Where does the data come from?
MOT results and vehicle details come from the DVSA MOT History API. Finance, write-off, stolen and keeper data comes from licensed data providers. We are an independent service, not a government website.
Where do I find the VIN?
On the dashboard at the base of the windscreen, on the driver's door pillar, under the bonnet and on the V5C logbook. It must match the logbook exactly — if it doesn't, walk away.
What does a car need to be legal on the road?
It must be registered with the DVLA, taxed (or SORN if kept off the road), have a valid MOT if older than three years, be insured and be roadworthy.
